Sisters rescued a severely injured dog and, at the vet, discovered she was pregnant with 9 puppies.
It all started when Meghan Wedge was told by her coworkers that a badly injured dog was lying in the parking lot outside their building. She told PBS39 how she found the animal.
“Every time she stood up, she would fall back down. And when she finally stayed up, you could see she couldn’t put any weight on her back leg.”
Wedge said she wanted to help in any way she could, so she turned to social media asking if anyone could take the dog in. But it was her sister, Sarah Bauer, who stepped up to take responsibility.
Bauer named the dog Izzy and immediately took her to a veterinarian, where they discovered the extent of her injuries. She had a dislocated hip, abrasions on her legs, and small pellet wounds all over her body.
And during Izzy’s examination, the vet found something surprising – the dog was pregnant!
“The vet told me she heard a heartbeat,” Bauer said. “So just knowing that one puppy survived everything its mother went through – that was amazing!”
The joy of learning that Izzy had managed to keep her puppy alive despite all the cruelty was overwhelming. But the surprise was even greater when they discovered it wasn’t just one puppy – it was nine.
Sarah had to launch a fundraiser to pay for all of Izzy’s medical treatment. Now Izzy lives surrounded by love, and even with some difficulty moving, she’s a very happy dog.
“She really came to life since the first time I met her. I think the puppies truly brought out the puppy in her. She gets around just fine, but I know she’s uncomfortable every day – especially when she tries to go up or down stairs or run with the puppies, she doesn’t put weight on that leg. I just want her to have the best life. That’s why I brought her home – I just want her to have a good life.”
